FREE Coloring Sheet: ‘Be a Hero for Dogs and Cats’
Dogs and cats depend on us to take good care for them, and that’s what we need to do!
There are plenty of ways we can give them the care they deserve! If you and your family are considering getting a dog or cat and you feel that you’re responsible enough to care for them, make sure you never, ever buy from a pet store or breeder, but instead adopt from a shelter. With 6 to 8 million cats and dogs entering animal shelters every year, there are so many of them just waiting and hoping for a good home!
But if you and your family already have dogs or cats or both, follow these steps so you can be the best friend to them ever:
- Keep them indoors
Dogs don’t want to be stuck outside, chained, and forced to live in your backyard. They want to be inside with their “pack”—you and your family! And cats should never be let outside unless you and your family are walking them on a leash and harness. Cats forced to live outside often get hurt—they can be hit by a car, attacked by other animals, or even abused by cruel people! Don’t risk it—keep them indoors!
- Give them walks and exercise
Dogs and cats love to play and get exercise—just like we do! Give them toys they enjoy, and take your dog on regular walks. Some cats like to go on walks, too! Be sure your dog or cat is wearing a leash and harness and that you never yank or pull on them. And always make sure they’re wearing a collar with their name and your family’s phone number, just in case!
- Keep them clean
Just like us, dogs and cats like to be clean. Make sure your animal companions have fresh water that’s changed at least once a day, and clean out your cat’s litterbox twice a day. Also, be sure to clean up after your dog!
- Hang out with them
Dogs and cats wait all day for their families to come home from school and work. Spend time with yours and give them lots of love when you get home.
