PETA Kids got an exclusive interview with Ashley Peterson, an animal-loving vegan and the voice of the newest main character of Monster High: River Styxx, the Grim Reaper’s daughter.

Tell us a little bit about your character, River Styxx, in the Monster High special Haunted.

She is the daughter of the Grim Reaper, but she’s the opposite of her dad. She’s colorful, fun, likes candy, and likes to throw parties for her friends on her dad’s yacht.

How old were you when you went vegan, and what motivated you to make the compassionate switch?

I started around age 6 when I stopped drinking cow’s milk. Around 11 I went mostly full vegan with my BFF. We stopped eating meat and milk together. Over time, it progressed when I learned about what a vegetarian and vegan were from PETA.

What is your favorite vegan food to eat at home?

Spicy broccoli! It’s super-easy to make. Just boil broccoli, drain it, put it back in the pot, and sauté it with spices.

What’s the best way that kids can help animals?

Volunteer and start meat-free campaigns at school!

Do you share your home with any animal companions? How did they become part of your family?

I have a couple fish! I rescued them from the fair. They’re about 3 years old and huge.

If you could be any animal, which would you be and why?

A Chihuahua. They’re so cute! They get spoiled, and I would totally like that if I were a puppy.
